    “The World as One”
“The artist on the prowl… the world as his territory.” The entire world is the workplace of the documentary photographer.” “The World as One” traces the chronological progression of documentary photography into the last decade of the 20th century, following the unification of East and West Germany, after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the re-integration of Europe.

The exhibits reflect the uniqueness of this historical situation, at the same time paying special attention to its social, political and cultural consequences. The 19 contributing artists view their social environments from different perspectives. Each documents, in his or her own unique way, the aspects of their individual realities that interest them the most. The exhibition presents a palette of sensitive pictorial observation, which is a strong tradition in Germany. Akin to photo-reporting though the works are, however, they go beyond mere documentation into the realm of aesthetic pictorial idiom, especially in subtle colour.

The exhibition is dedicated to artists who do not differentiate between other people’s commissions and their own work; who show “the world as one”; whose personal involvement encourages reflection rather than trying to shock; and who do not expose but rather respect the dignity of the sitters, both in letter and spirit.

More information on “The World as One” is in the attached document. Please also visit our website: http://www.goethe.de/ins/in/bag/kue/en2991267.htm

Three women artists have teamed up to present a glimpse into their inner worlds with paintings in watercolour, acrylic, oil and mixed media.

Mini Arora reveals her inner self through paintings of an abstract expressionist nature. This versatile artist has put together a series of abstracts in oil called ‘Syncopation’, the ‘Vedic’ series of mixed media collages on paper, and impressionistic views of figures and Ganeshas in acrylic.

Her Ganeshas are veiled behind a profusion of brush strokes or knife strokes so that you have to look deep into the painting to uncover its meaning. “Ganeshas are a favourite of mine,” says the artist, “I have such an affinity to the form that they just seem to come from within. Sometimes I don’t even see a Ganesha until someone points it out in one of my abstracts.”

Chandni Janardhan works in watercolours and pastels. She showcases the backwaters of Kerala with watercolours painted with precise, neat brushstrokes in the traditional method whereby the whites of the paper are left untouched. Her pastel portraits and wildlife paintings come alive with the genius of her deft strokes. Look out for her portrayal of the famous Afghan Girl.

Urvashi Thakkar’s desire is to give the viewer a sense of peace and calm away from our tumultuous world with her ‘Garden of the Gods’ series. Lotus flowers and the Divine being with its many faces are a passion for her, and she hopes her paintings can help the viewer in his search for strength and spirituality. She remembers Roerich encouraging her to paint and strive towards the beautiful with a quote from Plato, “From beautiful images we shall go to beautiful thoughts, from beautiful thoughts to beautiful life and from a beautiful life to absolute beauty”.

Since his Diploma in Applied Art (GD Art) from ABKM (Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya) College in Pune in 1994, Umesh has been working in the Advertising and IT industries in the areas of graphic design and multimedia animation.

Over the last decade, Umesh has been exploring the life in the villages of India, especially those of the fisher folk and other itinerant occupations. It is Umesh’s firm belief that the truth about life can only be seen in the villages and through the lives of the villagers.

Thus, it is no surprise that Umesh’s work presents a reflection of the irrepressible zeal and unmatched enthusiasm displayed by the village folk of India.
