Not very long ago I wrote about Akshaya Patra and how the food was on EB blog. Here is the paragraph from that post
My mother is a Govt school teacher. Last few years she doesn’t carry lunch to school. When ever I question her answer would be I like to have with my kids. They get food from Akshaya Patra we (teachers) make sure that we also eat the same food once the kids are done. I didnt care much until I got a mail from Akshaya Patra so that I can blog about them. That is when I went back to my mother to ask (Not a child you see!) howz the lunch at school? well the answer was “clean”, “healthy” and delivered on time everyday.

After that blog post. I was very keen on visiting Akshaya Patra’s Kitchen. They were very happy to oblige. But the condition was to be there at the kitchen before 7am as cooking gets over by 7:30am. Continue reading about Akshaya Patra on my blog

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a not-for-profit, Bangalore-based secular trust evolved a free lunch program in schools in the year 2000. They started as pilot project in five schools with 1500 kids at Bangalore and now they feed mammoth 825,000 kids in more than 4500 schools everyday. And I am sure Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest NGO-run school meal program in the world.
Mid-day meal program of Akshaya Patra is a public Private partnership program. AP runs with the subsidies from Govts and with the help of corporate and Individual donors.
With the mid-day meal served six days a week at school the attendance levels have gone up. My mom thinks food acted as the catalyst to pull more kids into her school to begin with. Specially with the families below poverty line. I guess this must be the same case with other schools in villages where a family earns less than $2 per day.

I would like to visit their Bangalore kitchen someday ( I am trying to guess the size of it). I read that they can cook about 1000000 meals in less than five hours. That must be an high tech kitchen!
PS: You can donate online at using credit card. Its costs $28 to feed a kid for one whole year. You can save some tax too.For volunteering opportunities please contact infodesk@akshayapatra.org

Well who does not know namma Vasanthi in Bangalore? She is known as Sunshine Girl here in Bangalore for her cheerfulness. She lightens up the city (specially for those who are stuck in the traffic) with her breakfast show on Radio City. Now she is all set to attend ‘Salzburg Young Global Leaders’ Summit which aims to envision how the world should look by 2030. She will be representing us in at Salzburg.

All the best Vasanthi. We are proud of you.
