    Bangalore BirdRace

The HSBC Bangalore BirdRace will take place on 11th, the second Sunday of February 2007. All interested birdwatchers and nature lovers are welcome to participate in it. The Bangalore BirdRace has been inspired by the India BirdRaces in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad-Gujarat, with slight modifications, keeping the logistics of travel and other factors into consideration. The Bangalore BirdRace will be a dawn to dusk event where teams of bird-watchers will spend the entire day birding in and within 50Km radius around Bangalore city. The participants will try and record as many species of birds as possible, learn about the finer points of bird-watching from the experts and the experienced, and then later in the evening, all teams will meet at a select venue over dinner and an interactive tête-à-tête.

Despite strict rules, there is a fun element to this exercise, which would help stimulate enormous interest in bird-watching as a highly popular hobby. The event would give us a good idea of the nature of this region’s birdlife and helps in building up support for environment and nature conservation. More simply, this even will provide a wonderful opportunity for all the birdwatchers to get together, catch-up with each other, exchange notes and talk birdlore and re-seal working relationships!

Of course, there is also the team spirit and participation that comes into focus here. To ensure that the results are as infallible and in principle as correct as possible, Bangalore BirdRace will have special adjudicators who analyze the results and announce the winners at the special evening programme before dinner. These adjudicators are highly experienced bird-watchers and much-respected senior naturalists/conservationists. Each Team gets an opportunity to interact with the others and recount their day’s experiences and bring in a great end to a day well spent with and for the feather folk, and for nature.

    RULES

    1. Each team will consist of 04 (four) persons (no less, no more, unless specially intimated to us) and each team must include a good birder who is familiar with the site’s/region’s avifauna.

    2. A Bird-Name will be given to each team.

    3. You are free to constitute your own team but must ensure at least one of you is a proficient birder, familiar with the region’s birdlife, and who can be the team captain.

    4. There is NO Registration Fee to take part in the Bangalore BirdRace.

    5. Each Team will be provided with a Bird Logbook consisting of a checklist of all species of birds recorded within the geographical limits of the Bangalore city, with appropriately marked columns for reporting observations. In case you happen to see any species not on this list, please include the same in the space provided.

    6. Each team remains as a single unit for the entire day and till the evening programme.

    7. The team may, if it so wishes, can employ the services of a driver for their vehicle (if they should choose a site that involves driving). The driver may or may not be a bird-watcher. In fact, depending upon sites chosen, please try & constitute your team in such a manner that at least one of you has ACCESS TO A VEHICLE.

    8. The organizers will not provide transportation, incidental expenses, breakfast or Lunch during the Bangalore BirdRace.

    9. Although there are PRE-DETERMINED ROUTES and birding spots, a team is free to choose its own route and site (s) for the day.

    10. You can Walk, Trek, Dive or Drive or even Fly as much as you may to a site or a cluster of sites.

    11. This Bird Race is a FULL DAY EVENT and will end with dinner at a chosen venue.

    12. The Bangalore BirdRace begins at dawn and ends at sun-down. Plan your day in such a manner as to converge at the evening venue not later than 6.30pm for the prize-ceremony and get-together. Please note that the evening’s programme (at some of the venues) would get over close to 11.15 pm. Hopefully, you wouldn’t mind one groggy get-up on a Monday morning, for the love of the feathered birds.

    13. There will be prizes for the team sighting the most number of species during the race and a prize for Bird of the Day

    14. Please visit the Bangalore page on website for details

Plans are underway to hold the first ever “Bangalore BirdRace” on February 11th, 2007, the second Sunday of the month. The “Bangalore BirdRace” will be fifth in the series of IndiaBirdRaces that started with a bang in Hyderabad on November 26, 2006. Sponsored by HSBC, the BirdRaces in major cites are being co-ordinated by Sunjoy Monga and his team from Mumbai. For details on these BirdRaces please visit http://www.indiabirdraces.com.

Concept:Each team will consist of 04 (four) persons (no less, no more, unless specially intimated to us) and each team must include a good birder who is familiar with the site’s/region’s avifauna. There will be a Bird-Name for each team.

You are free to constitute your own team but must ensure at least one of you is a proficient birder, familiar with the region’s birdlife, and who can be the team captain.

There is no Registration Fee for any of the IndiaBirdRaces.
Each Team will be provided with a Bird Logbook (consisting of a checklist of all species of birds recorded within the geographical limits of the concerned city’s BirdRace) with appropriately marked columns for reporting observations. The LogBook contains a detail listing of all species of birds recorded in this region during the past 20 years. In case you happen to see any species not on this list, please include the same in the space provided.

This is the first announcement regarding the Bangalore BirdRace, and more details on the exciting event will be posted-out soon. We plan to begin registration of interested participants by the first week of January 2007.

In organizing this event, we would like birdwatching enthusiasts in Bangalore – from absolute beginners to experienced birders to come together during this unique event. This is part of a continuing effort to make birdwatching enjoyable, exciting and adventurous in Bangalore.

    Cheers,

    Subbu.
